Iris
(I haven't come up with a name yet so lets call it Iris for now...)
The doorbell rang for the fourth time today. I huffed and got out of my seat to ‘answer’ the door. I already knew why my bell rang and I should have just ignored it, but I always hoped that it would be the person that I wished for. Though of course it was just another mean prank done by the new neighbours. They’ve been knocking at doors and ‘TP’ing houses all day. I yanked myself off the sofa and forced my feet to drag on the floor towards the door. It took a very long time as I strolled – annoyed, across the hall.
‘Hello?” I murmured dully as I tugged open our stiff door. My eyes searched with a tiny sprinkle of hope, though I doubted there was anyone there. Then I was shocked, as I saw a golden brown haired boy with his hand still pressed against my bell.
“Erm… hi…” The visitor was crouching awkwardly on my doorstep. He looked a little ashamed and embarrassed. I focused my eyes on him, he looked about a year older than me and quite tall for his age. His hair was golden brown and shaggily draping over his forehead. His eyes, dark brown, was flickering all over, like he was searching of something. His skin was a beautiful light brown tan that covered his well-built muscular body. I couldn’t figure out what it was but there was something unusual about him, magical even. Finally, his eyes found mine and he frowned slightly.
“Can I help you?” My voice gaining a little more interest as I stared at the strange boy in front of me. His eyes were completely unfocused, and he weren’t even listening to me. My head spun round in a daze and my breathing became difficult. I didn’t understand what was happening… My body was very healthy, I was never weak and I never lost fights, so why couldn’t I handle a little thing like breathing?
“Er… no” The boy smiled. He was very beautiful, this fact stunned me and I felt even more faint. He seamed pleased with my reaction and showed more teeth, as his smile grew wider. The awkward crouch eased until he stood up right. His hand flew towards me as a kind gesture. I shook it and felt my head spinning more out of control. I stumbled back a little.
“No? What are you doing here then?” My voice shook as I rocked back and forth trying to steady myself. It took a few seconds until I was almost back to normal, then I felt a little bit rude for saying that. I barely even noticed that question had caught him off guard. His eyes looked offended and confused but they held a golden shine in them that set me off spinning again.
“I live next door, I just moved here and I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself.” He became more confident and his voice became slightly louder. Ah… a new neighbour, he came to play ding-gong-ditch on my door, only he hadn’t had time to run away yet. That was strange, as in my mind I had wasted a lot of time before actually reaching the door.
“Oh… did you ring earlier? Sorry I couldn’t get to the door fast enough…” I accused him, but trying to act innocent. He could see right through me and guessed what I was hinting at.
“Erm… yeah… sorry about that…” He smiled apologetically, and his eyes shifted swiftly towards the gate to my front garden. I followed his gaze and saw what he was glaring at. The top of someone’s head was slightly in my view. Hmmm… those must be his group of ding-dong-ditchers.
“Well? What are you waiting for?” The corner of my mouth lifted slightly as I waited, feeling smug for some reason. What I said slowly sank in as I saw a play of emotions across his face.
“Oh sorry,” he apologised again, “I’m Daniel, Dan or Danny, whichever. I’m number 6 down there.” He pointed towards his right. “And you are...”
“Iris”
“Iris, how beautiful.” He smiled. I felt flattered, even though I knew he was talking about my name.
“Thanks.” I paused smiling back “So… are you going to introduce me to your little gang of friends back there?” He looked down at his feet for a while and eventually nodded.
“Sorry, again, about… earlier” He whispered and winked at me. I almost collapsed then but grabbed onto the door handle to keep me steady. Danny turned and gestured towards the group hiding behind my front garden fence. They stood up slowly one by one, looking ashamed. There were more than I had expected, five including Danny. Two had brownish hair and one was bright blond, the last one had gingery red hair. They all slowly stepped out from behind my fence and came out to meet me.
“So this is Luke,” he gestured to the bright blond one, his hair was unnaturally bright and too fake. He wasn’t as tall as Danny and less muscular and his eyes didn’t gleam so perfectly, but he surely wasn’t average. I scanned around quickly and all the five boys looked like they could be super models. “And John” The first brown who stood closest to me stepped forward and kissed the back of my hand. I blushed and smiled weakly. John was the tallest and probably the strongest too, and his brunette hair fell straight down behind his ears. His eyes were shimmering sapphire under his long black lashes. “Jake…” Danny gestured towards the red-haired one who smiled at me. I was surprised by his beauty but not as dazzled as I had been with Danny. Jake’s hair was the shortest, and probably the neatest too, it was gelled up into short spikes, which covered his sculp. He was probably average height for his age but very good-looking. “And last, Matt – Matthew.” Matt was the dirty blondish brown one, his face was stiff but his eyes were bright and beautiful. He simply nodded in my direction and I returned with a smile. Matt’s face was still solemn, he was taller than Danny but nowhere near as beautiful. He flicked his silky hair out of his emerald eyes, which stared at me awkwardly. I stared back. Danny followed the direction of my eyes and found Matt’s, glaring. He laughed. The sound of his charming, mellowing laughter made me turn immediately to look at him. I wondered how someone could be so beautiful and irresistible that even the sound of his laughter makes people stop and stare? “Matthew isn’t very welcoming is he? Well, trust me, he gets better the more you know him.”

Honey...
Life could be perfect for me. Mid- summer holidays on warm sandy beaches on the coasts in Greece, camping trips to ‘The New Forest,’ toasting marsh mellows and telling ghost stories, or even having a nice normal name like Sophie or Lucy or Grace. But no! I must have been a murderer or something in a past life because I’m stuck with a family like mine. Instead of sandy beaches in Greece, we get rocks in Brighton that rip your skin to shreds! We do have camping trips! (But that’s just me and my little sister in the garden. It’s normally about 5 minutes before we notice how cold it is and run inside!)
And as for my name… well let’s say it’s no where near Lucy or Grace. Unfortunately, my pathetic parents named me Honey! I mean come on! Who could even dream of getting a job as a lawyer or doctor with a name like mine? Well I could consider myself lucky if I compare my name to my two sisters’ names. My oldest sister is 18 now and her name is Dog. No, I promise that I’m not making this up from the top of my head, well I guess mama and papa were when they named her! My little sister is 7 and called Purple after Gran’s favourite colour! So that’s us, Honey, Dog and Purple, living what could one day be known as a life…
I sit in the bathroom adding yet another smudge of lipstick to my lips. Papa decided to take us all out for a ‘nice meal’ so thought I should hide my embarrassed face with make up. Trust me. When papa says ‘let’s go out for a nice dinner’, he is really saying ‘let’s go and raid the neighbour’s bins!’ Typical! I spring down the stairs and grab my coat which, as usual, is in a bundle on the floor.
“Everyone ready?” papa says. His grin is wide and his eyes sparkle in the light.
“Where are we going papa?” Purple wants to know. But dad just taps his nose which sends a nervous shiver down my spine. Where are we going? Will it involve a night at the police station like last time? I truly don’t want to know.
“Sonia! Sonia! Honey, would you be a darling and fetch mama, she’s been hours!”
“Sure papa.” I groan and stomp back upstairs, in search of a long lost mother with, might I add, a sensible name!
I fling the door in her room open and blurt out
“Papa wants you down…” I freeze in my step and look at what used to be my mama. Her eyes are brimming with tears, smudging her mascara. Her hair looks as if she had just crawled out from a bush and her face is covered with red stuff… blood? I open my mouth to scream but my voice has failed me. I feel faint; my mouth is dry and cold. What happened? Tears prick my eyes but I blink them back, attempting to be strong.
“Mama.” I whisper. I turn my head to focus on the blood. It looks sticky and lumpy, and then I remember that the date is the 30th October, the day before Halloween. Relief floods my body and mama smiles.
“Honey, you need to learn to not always think the worst of a situation. Anyway, you look too nice did papa not tell you where we’re going?”
I shrug and shake my head.
“We’re going for a nice meal. That’s all he said!”
Mama smiles and giggles a little. She explains that we’re going to a Halloween disco and hands me a black and red dress along with fake blood. A Halloween disco. Now this could be interesting!
* * *
The music was terrible but that’s normal for me. I’ve never been to a party without trashy music booming while old ladies sit in the corner playing bingo. But we had fun with no police involved. Hooray!
“I don’t want to go home!” Purple groans.
“We’d have to get away from this dump at some point!” Dog points out. Purple just pulls a face which makes us all smirk and we hop into the car.
Home sweet home! I hardly ever get the feeling of absolute exhaustion and longing to be home. Mama said that we would get a big surprise if we got ready for bed quickly. I could prey that it would be going to get my name changed, but obviously it would be the usual, a lolly-pop for Purple, a late pass for Dog and a later bed time for me. Purple goes mad, racing upstairs and almost falling down. She’s closely followed by Dog, hoping to get the late pass so she can hang out with her boyfriend before school. And finally I dawdle up looking at mama’s paintings which are hanging proudly on the wall. Mama has a job as an artist. She’s normally in the living room painting while watching Eastenders. But all the same she’s very talented. She’s had her paintings in many exhibitions and they always wow the crowd! I tend to always look at one of them very carefully as I pass it. I feel as though I have some sort of acquaintance with it. Almost like it talks to me… Some people would call me the geek of the art world, yet I just think I can pick out a good painting and explain why I like it! But this painting is of an eye. Just an eye with grey hair and grey skin around it. It scares Purple and Dog ignores it but I think it’s beautiful in its own special way…
When I finally reach the top of the stairs, I turn into my bedroom and close the door quietly behind me.
I'll post more soon!

Love Lilly
War of Winter (The begining of Chapter 1)
By Ruby
Hope you enjoy it!
LiLi ran into the tent. The music stopped and everyone looked at her. John walked up to her and said-
“Why are you late for class.” Before she could answer he said “You have kept everyone waiting. Do you no how disrespectful that is.We have a show tomorrow and you think you can be late. Not acceptable. You are staying after rehearsal and thats final. Now get in you place, you're doing Dance of the Angel.”
LiLi didn’t even get to explain herself. That’s how strict he is but it works. LiLi wouldn’t be a great dancer if it wasn’t for him. When she was five her mother died, after that her dad changed. He never had time for her. When LiLi was ten she left home. LiLi was living on the streets; She had no where to turn, no one to turn to. She was lost like a star in time but then John found her outside the circus. He took her in and raised her.
Now she live in a tent at the circus. Traveling the world is not the life she would have chose for herself but she loves it anyway. LiLi’s coach, John taught her everything she knows. He will not stop until she gets it right. He is a very strict man.
LiLi skipped and leaped across the stage. Her arms swung across her head. It was truly spectacular. She twirled and trotted as the music played and when the music stopped she did a graceful bow.
After the dance LiLi sat in the chair waiting for the other dancers to leave. When he shut the door a brisk wind ran up her spin. John gestured her to follow him so she did. He took her into a strange tent that she had never been in before. It had a bunch of cages with the circus animals in them. There where elephants, monkeys, birds, lions, horses and seals but the one that caught her eye was the snow tiger.
It just laid there at the end of its cage. It look like it hadn’t moved in a while.
“Do you know why I brought you here?”John said in a strict voice.
“No I don’t.” She said, confused.
John sighed and held his head.“I brought you here to see the circus animals. You see these animals are like performers . They are a part of the performance but they aren’t late for rehearsal." He said in a stern voice. "You can not be late again. We are preforming tomorrow. It is in the middle of winter, our biggest audience so we need to give them a great performance. Understand?”
“Yes I understand. I will try to get to rehearsal on time.” LiLi said convincingly.
“Ok squirt, you can go.” John said in a sweet voice. He walk out of the tent. Even though he said she could leave, LiLi just stood there staring at the tiger. It was huge. It was glistening white and had dark black strips. The tiger looked up at her and she knew there was something weird about it.
LiLi rushed out of the tent into hers. She sat on her bed and started to think for a while. She thought if the show was good enough and if a lot of people did buy the tickets. These questions can only be answered when it’s time for the show.
Then she laid down and went to sleep. She dreamed of the tiger preforming in the circus. Was it really like a dancer? It’s performance has to be perfect. If it was they have a lot in common.

When LiLi woke up in the morning she heard the sound of the circus animals. They where being dressed up ready for the show. She got in her clothes and walked outside. People where getting ready. Practicing their acts. People where kart wheeling, riding on tricycles and some other crazy stuff.
She heard music coming from the performance tent so she ran towards it. She ran inside to see John training the other performers for the performance tonight. He turned around and said:
“You’re not late for class, good now get in you place.”
As she got in line she was relieved that she wasn’t late. She couldn’t go through another lecture.
A few hours past and they were let out of class early to get ready for the full circus rehearsal.
She went to her tent and got undressed. Then she got into her costume. It was a ballerina suit. It was pink and had red roses on it. She put her hair in a pretty bun and put a tiara in it. LiLi looked beautiful.
After she got ready she walked over to the big tent. As LiLi walked in the tent she saw everyone in there costumes ready to practice. When it started, it took a few hours to complete but when it was finished they all had some lemonade together and chatted.
They had to rehears one more time before the show but outside a line stared to grow. There was a girl outside waiting to go in but she was different. This is Winter. She is an Animalia. Animalias are not normal human beings or animals.
Winter walked by a tree where a girl, Venues, was siting. she smelt the air and she new that Venues was a Animalia to. She took out a camera and took a picture of her without her knowing.
'I have to get this picture back to my school.' Winter thought.
“Ok everyone please come in and hand me you tickets.”
